The Village Players Theatre of Oak Park, a non-profit organization founded in 1959, promotes the arts through theatrical productions and educational programs that encourage cultural understanding and embrace diversity in the village and surrounding communities.
As a vibrant part of Oak Park's cultural history, Village Players Theatre promotes a creative spirit in its productions and educational programs. Each production features some of the area's most promising and talented professional performers and designers. The Village Players Theatre of Oak Park is a member of the League of Chicago Theatres and the West Suburban Theatre Connection.
The space itself is surprisingly impressive; its proscenium theatre is actually quite a bit more spacious than most Chicago storefront spaces, and has decent lighting and sound systems. The venue also includes dressing rooms, a small set shop, an extra rehearsal/classroom space and the company's offices.
Revitalized in recent years by the formation of an Ensemble to help guide the theater's activities, the company produces both main stage productions (comedies, dramas and musicals) as well as children's productions created in part by community youngsters. Decoration of the lobby to create a haunted house atmosphere has become a Halloween tradition. While lacking a tremendous budget, this company has a lot of community support and tremendous heart, and their venue reflects that.
