Tough, tight tee shots, numerous forced carries to target landing areas, and well-protected greens are typical on most holes at Bittersweet Golf Club, opened in 1996 in Gurnee. Water or wetlands come into play on 16 holes. Protected natural areas are perhaps the most extensive in greater Chicago and provide habitat for a wide variety of waterbirds as well as a beautiful (and intimidating) setting for a round a golf. The layout on the back nine incorporates stands of mature timber with the marshland, adding interest and difficulty. Many of the relatively short par 4s require a decision between a layup iron or a perfectly shaped drive. Course management, precision shot-making, and a good supply of golf balls are requisites at Bittersweet.
