Description of Walker Bros. (Arlington Heights)

When it comes to cravings, chocolate is probably the sole item on many people's lists. But for anyone who's been to Walker Bros. and tasted the apple pancake, there's no doubt the age-old favorite will quickly be added to the list.

Walker Bros. opened in 1960 and has an ambiance that sets you even further back, to the heyday of Tiffany lamps, stained glass windows and mahogany woodwork and tables. It's been serving up what sounds like typical breakfast food since its inception, never straying from hearty pancakes, omelets, waffles, crepes and eggs. But what sets Walker Bros. apart from any other brunch place is the sheer quantity and taste of its food.

It sounds cliched, but you really can't go wrong with anything on the entire menu. The apple pancake is more like an immense cakey dessert, featuring a thick pancake covered with granny smith apples and a cinnamon glaze that gets all gooey when it bakes. For just $7.95, it's big enough for two (with an average appetite) plus a small doggy bag. Omelets (try the Mediterranean, with feta cheese, onions and spinach) are roughly the size of a baby's head and still come with three buttermilk pancakes or toast for roughly $7.50. Prices for most of the main dishes are extremely reasonable, but if you want to keep your tab down, watch out for the juice; you get a mere eight ounces for $2.25 or 12 for $2.95. Be prepared for long lines on weekend mornings, but an efficient waitstaff and kitchen generally keep the wait no more than 30 to 45 minutes.
