One might expect something punk rock, grunge or even goth about a bakery called Twisted Sister, but that's before opening the elegant French doors, floral designs bordering the glass, into the quant Victorian setting of this all-natural pastry shop offering affordable and delicious sweet treats.
Mini tea cookies are sold by the pound at $13.95. You can order a little less than a dozen, plus an eclair, a blueberry tart and a red velvet cupcake for under $15. The eclair has typical custard filling and chocolate topping, but the cupcake, which my roommate and I give an A++, was one of the best I've had. To maintain moisture and to avoid the stale texture that accompanies cakes kept refrigerated too long, the cupcakes are set out at room temperature. And though they're out of season, the blueberries on the tart tasted as if they'd been picked that morning.
I have to make note of Twisted Sister's smart packaging: the pastry items were placed in a perfectly sized container, accented with twine for security and elegance. Likewise, a bib around the cupcake kept the frosting from sliding in transit. The cookies were neatly tucked into a small paper bag, wax paper around the tea clouds to avoid powdered sugar from smothering the peanut butter, double chocolate and molasses.
Cakes can be made to order starting at $28.95, and for larger parties and celebrations, sheets and half sheets one to two layers high can be purchased for between $48.95 and $74.95.
