Joe Weiss, founder of Joe's Seafood, opened an unassuming lunch stand on Miami Beach nearly a century ago. In 1921, a customer brought in a bag of stone crab and asked Joe if he could cook them. Joe served the crab with mustard sauce, coleslaw and hash browns, and a lunchtime legend was born.
In 2000, Joe's teamed up with Chicago restaurant group Lettuce Entertain You to open the 60 E. Grand location. Unlike the original beachside stand, this Joe's is open all year round. One thing that hasn't changed: The cracked stone crab is still goin' strong, as always served up with Joe's famous mustard sauce. The restaurant's slogan, "We honor the legend, one claw at a time," certainly holds true.
Beyond the stone crab there are plenty of tasty options on the menu: Joe's bone-in signature prime steaks, a variety of flown-in-daily seafood, and side dishes like creamed spinach and Jennie's potatoes (named for Joe's wife.) For dessert, the key lime pie earns praises.
And while the name is casual, the restaurant sure isn't. Most entrees will cost you $25 or more, served in an elegant dining scene set with of dark, polished wood, white tablecloths and a tuxedoed wait staff. The bustling bar (which stays open an hour later than the dining room every night) provides a more casual alternative and less expensive snacks like burgers and sandwiches.
