Have-it-your-way frozen dessert is not a new concept, but iCream takes things a step further. True to its name, every ice cream and sorbet order at iCream is custom built from the ground up. Choose a dairy or non-dairy base (including soy milk), flavors (from natural fruit to more exotic offerings like burnt sugar or Root Beer), toppings, even colors. A small cup starts at $3.99.
While the novelty of building custom ice cream is appealing, ice cream purists may be thrown for a loop by the pudding-reminiscent, not-quite-ice-cream texture of what iCream serves up. Even so, a good chunk of the fun here is the atmosphere and the experience. The sleek, industrial kitchen shine of the decor gives the impression of walking into a mini ice cream factory and the mixers are up-front and center, allowing you to watch your concoction made before your eyes by accommodating servers.
Feeling unconventional? Try the "hot pudding," made in a similar fashion.
