It's hard not to mention Big Boy Gyros in the same sentence as Lane Tech High School, as this resident hot dog joint sits a foot-race away from the campus on Western Avenue.
Inside you’ll find giant bulletin murals confirming the student body’s existence, aside various 1950s ephemera, like pictures of James Dean. In a half-mile circumference of a fast-food circus – Popeyes, Wendys, Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway – it’s a proudly original neighborhood staple.
The food’s greasy-grill standard, with a little Greek support. Quarter-pounders, double hamburgers, shish-ka-bobs, Italian sausages and classic Chicago dogs never break $5, if you don’t want the fry and fountain drink fix for $2.25 more. A “dinner” section applies Greek salads liberally with whole cuts of chicken ($8.09) and spinach pie ($5.49). Otherwise the side order menu dominates the pocket-change teenager set, wrought with French fries, onion rings and pizza puffs, averaging about $2 an order.
