Editorial Review of Hamburger King

You hear a name like Hamburger King and you think of American food, particularly hamburgers, grilling in the back on a metal bed of its own greasy, meaty juices.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your preference) you would be wrong to apply that scenario to this Hamburger King, because this one actually has very little to do with hamburgers at all (there are 10 hamburger choices on a menu of over a hundred items). In fact, it's not even American food. Try Asian-American food, one with the following motto: "We serve creative Oriental breakfast since 1960." Breakfast specials include the akutagawa (hamburger, egg, green pepper, onion and bean sprouts), chicken akutagawa, sausage akutagawa, two eggs with beef or chicken teriyaki and a host of others ($3.25-$5.95). The sandwich menu includes beef teriyaki, grilled cheese, the reuben, the monte cristo, a double hamburger and more ($2-$5). Dinners include fried chicken, ribeye steak, meat loaf, the hamburger royale and more ($5-$8).

And last, but not least, there's the menu for the Orientally-inclined, like bi bim bop (seasoned beef, vegetable and fried egg on a bed of steamed rice), hot spicy wheat noodle, mon-doo soup, hot and spicy chicken, egg foo yong, peking beef, garlic chicken and chop suey ($3-$7).

Frankly, the food is cheap and strangely fantastic. So what if it's not what you expected when you heard the name? Everybody loves a good surprise, especially when it involves a quality meal.
