Yoko Noge

The Osaka-raised Noge came to Chicago at the turn of the '80s to study keys under boogie-woogie innovator Erwin Helfer. From there she took her affinity for African rhythms and traditional Japanese flair and quickly found permanence at the now defunct HotHouse, every Monday night, for 15 years. Somewhat of an acquired vocal taste, Noge works in bursts of rasp soul, delivering her melodies in front of an all-star backing band, the horn-heavy Jazz Me Blues. For those who failed to catch the magic at the HotHouse, turn to Noge's debut record, Yoko's Blue Monday Jam. Otherwise, all three studio cuts, Thrill Me (1996), Yoko Meets John(1999) and Struttin' With Yoko (2001), are fresh clashes of East and West culture that Noge can't help but broadcast in an endearing way.
