| The University of Chicago Department of Music’s Central Javanese Gamelan Ensemble is a student group that performs in conjunction with Friends of Gamelan, Inc. and is open to all interested musicians. No prior musical experience is required for membership, as beginning instruction is available during the autumn quarter. The Central Javanese Gamelan focuses on authentic performance practice and makes use of numerous opportunities to play with visiting artists from Java and around the world. Their performances features contemporary Indonesian and American compositions, as well as traditional gamelan gendhing.
