| Gutsy vocalist is the leader of acid jazz band Peking Turtle, the T. Monique Trio (a jazz unit), and plays with Sumo (a 10-piece improv band) and Mr. Egg Germ, a funk band led by Rick Gehrenbeck (Poi Dog Pondering). Typanie grew up in Wisconsin, attended Western Michigan University for a year, where she -- like Tori Amos and Luther Vandross -- flunked out of music school. She moved to Illinois to attend Elmhurst College, and began singing with Choral Thunder, a South Side gospel group. From there, she sat in with a number of groups, including Jive Council, Liquid Soul, and Those Swingers.
