| Shades of Fiction, formed in 2002 from the demise of nationally and locally recognized bands such as Island/Def Jam recording artists Relative Ash, followed by Crash Poet and Red River. Shades of Fiction bring beautifully spawned creative elements together to forge a sonic release of music that engulfs listeners instantly. Everything started when John Salazar, Brian Kowalski and Mike Tate, three likeminded individuals bred for music and the stage chanceably linked up with old friend and vocalist Picasso Dular.
Shades of Fiction's 2005 debut "The Nurse With Amnesia", is an album of unprecedented musicianship, crafting searing guitars, tastefully inventive electronics, with emotionally draining vocals that range from dramatic sincerity to heart breaking despair. Shades of Fiction is a band that embodies talent; each musician is keenly adept at producing exquisite blasts of raw passion, unleashing music that is as touching as it is tumultuous. Brian Kowalski's amazing guitar proficiency embraces the listener and leaves the soul bruised. John Salazar shows awe-inspiring skill behind the drum kit, pounding out progressively intricate beats and then coating the songs with simplistic perfection. Mike Tate's programming beautifully accentuates every nuance of a song, not too mention his foundational and creative bass playing. This amounts to an unbelievable debut, as all these musicians' combined efforts exceed any expectation, and are truly glamorous. Picasso Dular's deeply personal lyrics add painful realism to Shades of Fiction's songs, and his melodies, hooks, and performance bear overwhelming intensity. As Dular vents his anguish and frustration through his music, one can feel this pain and can sympathize with his plight. The Nurse With Amnesia remains tremendously impressive as a band's debut, and leaves the listener avidly awaiting future recordings.
