Serengeti

Serengeti's style may confuse those looking for a traditional MC, but he's a guy who likes to stand out from the crowd-even if there's isn't one. Only about 8 people showed up for a recent set at Mix Bar, and he performed as if he was in front of a sellout crowd. At the end of the show, he apologized for the poor turnout and introduced himself as Dave. His mild manner and humble demeanor add to the intrigue surrounding who Serengeti really is. Albums named Race Trading and Noticeably Negro imply that he's probably trying to figure it out himself. He's got Thunder Valley available for free on Audio 8's website, and he's planning a re-release for his fan-favorite Dennehy on iTunes (check the Chicago sports-centric title track). His tongue-in-cheek rhymes and subject matter satirize a world that can be extremely fickle, making him one of hip-hop's most loveable unofficial sociologists. (Jeff Min)
