| This genre-bending eight person septet performs its unique style of rhythm and blues and soul weekly at various local venues. They've played Double Door and Metro and are in the middle of a multi-month weekly stand (Monday nights) at Schuba's. After writing nearly a dozen songs, Poi Dog Pondering backing vocalist Robert Cornelius recruited fellow Pois Arlene Newson (tambourine, vocals), Paul Mertens (sax, flute, clarinet) and Leddie Garcia, also of Liquid Soul, on congas. With a rhythm section comprised of local hip-hop, acid jazz band members, the final project sounds something like Poi Dog but with a bit more funk. They often indulge in interesting covers including the Marvin Gaye classics "Love and Happiness" and "Let's Get It On." Many of the covers blend seamlessly into the solid original material, recalling the sounds of Sly and the Family Stone and the Jackson Five as well as the soul sounds of the seventies and eighties. The group is in the process of recording and shopping a demo to indies. Other members include: Jessie Richardson on bass, Rob Lambert on drums, Chip Dubose on guitar (all also of the band Jabon) and Rick Garambeck (also of Buttafly, Hipnotic and Swag).
