NOMO

Led by local saxophonist Elliot Bergman, the sounds of Michigan afro-beat collective NOMO are as rooted in sophistication as they are in funky, danceable grooves. Bergman, who met his bandmates at the University of Michigan, resides in the Chicago suburbs and utilizes instruments like the electronic mbira, a modern rendition of the wooden Zimbabwean instrument that uses staggered metal keys to produce different pitches. The eight-piece group draws comparisons to bands like Antibalas, Konono No. 1 and Tortoise, but it employs electronics and compositional techniques that give NOMO a unique sound.

After selling a few thousand copies of its debut on Ypsilanti Records in 2004, NOMO began building buzz with the 2006 release of New Tones on Ubiquity Records. The group's sophomore album for Ubiquity, due in June 2008 and titled Ghost Rock, displays its creative maturity and evolves its sound with additional instrumentation on top of its huge horn section. The group has performed at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and been remixed by IDM/instrumental hip-hop artist Dabrye for electronic label Ghostly International, both of which are based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
