Mucca Pazza

Italian for "crazy cow," Mucca Pazza is a 30-member Gypsy-rock marching band that describes itself as "circus punk." Sousaphonist Mark Messing founded the ensemble in late 2004, although its roots trace to more than a year prior, when Messing organized an anti-war marching band for the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. In the process of forming Mucca Pazza, Messing enlisted talented local musicians like trombonist Nick Broste of Herculaneum as well as a trio of cheerleaders. Devoted to audience enjoyment, the group performs plenty of original booty-shaking tunes to go with assorted covers of Serge Gainsbourg, Ali Hassan Kuban, Le Tigre, The Bar-Kays and '60s TV theme songs.

Mucca Pazza's popularity has soared in recent years, as the quirky collective performed at Lollapalooza and during the closing credits on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." The group released its second album in June 2008; its first album, A Little Marching Band, is currently distributed by Southern Records.
