| Not to be confused with supersonic, Lubriphonic is glam's answer to blues. Its rhythmic, funkadelic stuff is tailored for Saturday-night dance floors. The fusion project blossomed from sessions at Chicago's famed Checkerboard Lounge, where guitarist Giles Corey and drummer Rick King cut their teeth. The duo recruited three more heavy hitters who can be heard on B.B. King and Koko Taylor records: saxophonist Jowesley Boston, trombonist Johnny Cotton and bassist Joewuan Scott. If you're not paying attention, the quintet can be pigeonholed as a jam band. But as both its self-titled debut and sophomore album, Supermoncho, suggest, Lubriphonic is really a master at morphing genres, one minute playing a Grateful Dead shoulder-shimmy ("Don't Go"), the next a Stones-esque ballad ("Survivors").
The band's Myspace tag puts it best: "Horny Rock 'n' Roll and Hard Soul."
Stop by Lincoln Park's Alive One for the band's Thursday night residency. (Gavin Paul) For more information, visit their website: http://www.lubriphonic.com
