| Saxman became well-known during the 1948, when he began working with Miles Davis (he also recorded with him between 1949-51). He recorded for (and was of critical importance to) Lennie Tristano, his former Chicago mentor, and himself from 1949 on, and was also a member of the harmonically daring big bands of Claude Thornhill and the Stan Kenton Orchestra (1952-3), as well as with Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan and Miles Davis. His free-jazz Motion with Elvin Jones was recently reissued on Verve. He has continued to perform, and has recorded prolifically, including Subconscious-Lee (1949-50; Prestige/OJC), Live At The Half Note (1959; Verve), and Yes Yes Nonet (1979; Steeplechase). He and French pianist, who recently released Star Eyes, Hamburg 1983 (Hatology) were among the headliners of the 1998 Chicago Jazz Festival. At the age of 11 he bought a clarinet from the Boston Store in Chicago because they gave him a coupon book for 200 free lessons!
