Kranky Records

Noted as a home of bands who combine experimental and often electronic influences with elements of more traditional rock structures, Kranky Records was formed by two music industry veterans, Bruce Adams and Joel Leoschke in 1993. Leoschke had spent five years at Cargo (where the two met) as the label's domestic buyer. Adams had previously been at Touch and Go. Says Leoschke in a Chicago Reader interview, "Curmudgeon had too many syllables -- got to keep it short and snappy."

Since their first single by Richmond, Virginia's Labradford, they've released 25 albums, though both still have day jobs... Their artists include: Labradford, Jessamine, Dissolve, Roy Montgomery, Dadamah, Spiny Anteaters, Low, Amp, Bowery Electric, Magnog, Doldrums, and Pan-American.
