| Daughter of Grammy Award-winning symphony and opera conductor John Nelson (Chicago Lyric Opera, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris), Kari dreamt of becoming an opera diva as a child. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, she fronted a heavy metal band in the early '90s, sang backing vocals for a number of funk bands, including Brother Brother, and Funkhouse, and then joined the Drovers in 2000. At the same time, she was studying jazz, and performing weekly at Pops for Champagne between 1997-2000. He first full-length CD, The Whale and the Elephant, is fantastic. Featuring performances by many other Chicago musicians, including Tom Garling, Larry Grey, Hamid Drake, Liz Knolls, Ben Lewis, Brett Simons, and Gerald Dowd.
