Julie Loyd

Twenty-four-year-old Julie Loyd has been touring, playing music as her full-time job, for the last four years. Among the ranks of “indie road warriors,” Julie played over 170 shows in 2005 alone. She’s developed an interesting touring theory. Tour out of a town long enough to win the local “best of” contests and then move someplace new. Julie began her touring career in Asheville in 2002. In 2004 she won the Grey Eagle Songwriter Shootout only a few weeks before she moved to Northampton, MA. In Massachusetts it took her only 8 months to win the Best Folk/Folk-Rocker in the Valley award from The Valley Advocate (serving all of western Massachusetts where everyone seems to be a folk musician.) At the time she had already moved her stuff into storage to hit the road for a national tour. Julie next challenge lies in Chicago. Already selling out acoustic venues here in town, tidings bode well for Julie and her “wiggly acoustic rock”.

She says she stays on the move as much as possible to keep from freezing (both on- and off-stage). Originally a dancer and child of musical theater, Julie Loyd’s music comes across best on stage. Julie has played all around the country sharing stages with such performers as Shawn Mullins, Alana Davis, Michelle Malone, and G-Love and Special Sauce, to name a few. Though she’s left behind the Broadway vibrato, she uses her movement experience to step inside her songs, contorting, kicking, and undulating to the beat of her own percussive guitar playing. She has a knack for making folk dynamic.

This fall Julie will be releasing her fourth album and one of her most exciting projects yet. This will capture a slice of her on stage energy as it has been recorded live at venues all over the country. Pre-orders are under way with a release date tentatively set for the fall. Part of this album was recorded at a sold out show of Chicago’s very own acoustic hot-spot, Uncommon Ground. Called “an artist to look out for” by Performer Magazine and “an acoustic spitfire with a kick-ass stage presence” by Curve Magazine, it seems like people are beginning to take notice of Julie Loyd.
