| Young alto saxophonist who moved to New York in 1994. When home, he fronts the New Trad Octet, a Mardi Gras year-round Crescent City-style eight-piece. He's not as flashy as we've come to expect from star jazz reedmen, but -- as Chicago Reader jazz critic Neil Tesser says -- "Newell's power comes from deep under the surface, ahcnoring his somewhat introspective solos, which ebb and flow in calm precision and crest in brief, glassy waves." His Quartet has released a new CD. Downbeat Magazine says "Newell has found his voice." The Chicago Reader calls it "Genuinely exciting... intellectually intriguing."
