Giant Step

Giant Step formed January 1999. Since their inception, the band has embraced the DIY attitude that is embodied by the independent friendly environment of their home base in Chicago. Three independent ep’s have been released in a 24 month period. “headstrong” released in January 2001 and “cul-de-sac” released in January 2002 have both exhausted their initial 1,000 unit pressings.

Giant StepThe newest cd “the shark”, released in January 2003 is receiving airplay on independent and local radio programs and is currently available through the band or select retail and on-line outlets. All three releases were recorded and co-produced by Andy Gerber at Million Yen Studios and mastered by Mike Garsen at Kingsize Studios. A band crafted on stage, Giant Step has performed in eight states at premier venues, the members have collectively played on numerous tours with former bands. 2003 performances have included Giant Step sets at both the South By Soutwest music conference in Austin, Texas and at the Lollapalooza music festival at Chicago’s Tweeter Center. Their live show has been embraced as “guitar driven rock with plenty of edge and air tight delivery” (Chicago Tribune’s Metromix), “possessing blustery qualities, putting the group in the same level as say Superdrag or The Soundtrack Of Our Lives” (Illinois Entertainer), “engaging rock... a well-crafted, dependable machine” (AOL on-line).

Giant Step’s founder, bass player Keith Wilkey, split ways with the band in May. For the next two months, Local H’s Scott Lucas played stand in bass player and helped rock the house. Rich Arendt, an outstanding multi-instrumentalist and song craftsman, has now taken on permanent bass player duties. Giant Step is currently playing regional dates while recording their first full length record. A fourth ep, a free sampler printed by the band, is now available.
