| Born in Naperville, IL, Hoekstra attended DePaul University (BA in English, with a minor in creative writing), and Belmont University in Nashville (M.Ed. in English). In 1987, he formed, Bucket Number Six, an edgy country band which recorded two CDs (a self-titled record for Butch Vig's Madison-based Boat label, and High on the Hog, produced by Jeff Murphy). His CD Around the Margins was amoung five finalists in the folk/singer-songwriter category in 2001's Independent Music Awards. "A lot of people write songs," says Wired Magazine's Philip Van Vleck, "Hoekstra writes five-minute worlds." Noel Murry (Nashville Scene Critics Picks, 2001) calls Hoekstra "Nashville's most inventive and literate folk-rocker...his captivating story songs a shaded with gospel and psychedelia are thoroughly distinctive, in a genre that typically relies on tradition and plainness. If you haven't caught up to Hoekstra yet, nows the time to start lending an ear, you probably haven't heard anything quite like him." Recordings include When the Tubes Begin to Glow (1994), Rickety Stairs (1996, Nashville Music Award Nominee for Best Folk Album of the Year), Make Me Believe (1999), and Around the Margins.
