| Where Motown definied the music of the Motor City, Curtis Mayfield shaped the sound of Windy City soul. A notable performer and recording artist, Mayfield also wrote and produced songs for Major Lance, Billy Butler, and Walter Jackson in the mid-1960s. Check out his Superfly (Curtom, 1972), which featured the hits "Super Fly," "Freddie's Dead" and "Pusherman." If you're interested in his work with the Impressions, you can try The Anthology 1961-1977. His music was one of the major factors in the success of the otherwise-unnotable blaxploitation genre of films. You can find some of that good music on Ice T's one-stop sampler Pimps, Players, and Private Eyes (Sire/Warner) and on the Dead Presidents Soundtrack (Underworld/Capitol).
