The Chicago jazz pianist is not only everybody's favorite accompaniast (He's a longtime sideman for Von Freeman, Jackie Allen & Kirsten Gustafson) but a talented bandleader as well. The "moment" for his 21st Century Review, a ten-person review of American jazz-related musical traditions from the perspective of the next century -- which he started in 1995 -- has finally come. Williams also leads a number of smaller groups. Says the Chicago Tribune, "the 21st Century Musical Review yields exquisite music-making."
The Chicago Reader's Neil Tesser calls the elaborate stage show "a streamlined vehicle that purrs in first gear and roars in fifth." "They do play jazz," adds the Chicago Reader, "but they spend almost as much time playing with jazz, crafting a review that proves hipper than you might expect."
And, finally, from the Pioneer Press: "This is no 'listen-to-a-song-or-two-and-then-resume-talking' jazz performance. You get a program when you come in, the show is lighted like a play and there are seven instrumentalists, as well as three vocalists, entertaining for over two hours, with one intermission. But that's just for starters."
Band members include saxophonists Rich Fudoli and Tim McNamara, bassist Dan DeLorenzo, trumpeter Tito Carillo, percussionist Tony Pinciotti, trombonist Sean Flanigan, vocalists Eden Atwood, Anita 'Penny' Jeffries, Gingi Lahera and Keli Briggs. Their debut CD is called Songs for Swinging Sophisticates, Volume One.
