| North Dakota-born bassist studied at the Curtis Institute of Music before being apponted to the Minnesota Orchestra at the age of 18, one of the youngest musicians ever hired. He remained in Minnesota through Sir Neville Marriner's tenure, and came to Chicago in 1984 when invited to join the Chicago Symphony by Sir Georg Solti. Mr. Opland is also on the faculty of the DePaul University School of Music and a member of the Chicago Chamber Musicians.
