Editorial Review of Occult Bookstore

Though you may not know it, secrets abound in Chicago. One example is this nearly 90-year-old bookstore on the outskirts of Wicker Park. Books on I-Ching (an ancient Chinese system of wisdom and philosophy), tarot and self/cosmic healing are just a few of the titles you'll notice inside the wide-open, gallery-like bookstore space. The store offers weekly classes on magick subjects like European witchcraft, and a friendly staff member is always around to answer your oddball questions.

Originally created in 1916 (it was called the Self Help Research Center until 1920), the Occult Bookstore first sold its wares on State Street downtown before moving on to Wicker Park (in the current Earwax location) and then to its current storefront. The bookstore has gathered quite a following amongst folks seeking alternative religions and spiritualities. "We're trying to introduce the Chicago community to different religions, the metaphysical, spiritual and just plain odd concepts and ideas," says current co-owner, Louvel Delon.

Stroll around and check out the tightly organized sections—you'll be surprised by how all-encompassing the selection is. Don't be surprised if you hear something like the Vinayaka Stotra (a chant of the 108 names of Ganesha, the Hindu god and remover of all obstacles and categories) playing on a computer behind the front desk. Stop and sniff the many varieties of incense, browse through the classical charms and talismans (each metal seal is meant to protect the wearer and ward off negative forces) or just bury your nose in a book on haunted Lake Michigan.
