Description of Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival

Date: November 22, 2008

Cost: $31 online, $35 day of show or at retail partners (Smoke Daddy and Cellar Rat Wine Shop)

What to expect: A full day of blues and bluegrass at the Congress Theater. Artists include the David Grisman Quintet, the Avett Brothers, Ha Ha Tonka, Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials, Majors Junction, the Giving Tree Band (doing pop-up balcony performances throughout the day) and more. There will also be sketch comedy throughout the day from Second City's "Cell Camp."

Why to go: This is the culmination of a lifelong dream for organizer Mike Raspatello, and the acts are appropriately dreamy, satisfying everyone from the purists (Grisman, Lil' Ed) to the forward-thinkers (Avett Brothers, Ha Ha Tonka). The best part: you don't have to camp out to hear it. (Don't try, either; Milwaukee Avenue and tent stakes don't mix.)

Additional info: There will be unlimited re-entry until 5 p.m., and you can always go to the smoking lounge without leaving the theater. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments and participate in the open jam session all day long (there will be an 'instrument check' so you don't have to carry it around all day). Attendees can browse over 50 booths of artists, vendors, and charitable causes. Artists will be creating their art on-site and selling it while the Saving Tiny Hearts Society (the beneficiary of the event) will be raffling off swag from the artists.

The official after-party will be held at Elbo Room immediately following the show. Entry is free with your festival ticket.
