John Moulder

One of Chicago's better jazz guitarists, he has performed with internationally recognized artists including Eddie Harris, Bob Mintzer, Kurt Elling, Terry Callier, Lyle Mays, and Paul Wertico. Says Chicago Tribune critic Howard Reich, "His... is a profound style in which he spins lines of remarkable length and harmonic complexity." Frequently plays with another talented guitarist, John McLean.

John received a masters degree in Jazz Studies and pedagogy from Northwestern University. he has taught master classes for Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Workshop and has conducted clinics at universities, high schools and other settings.

As a band leader, you can hear Moulder on Through The Open Door (1997, Igmod/Mo-Tonal Records) -- Paul Wertico, Jim Trompeter, and Eric Hochberg also appear -- and on his first CD, Awakening (1993, Mo-Tonal Records -- featuring Wertico, Steve Eisen, Kelly Sill, Mike Kocour, and Barbara Unger-Wertico). Of his second album, Through the Open Door, Chicago Reader critic Neil Tesser says, "The subtlest aspect of Moulder’s development strikes me as the most impressive: his ability to incorporate the influence of such major stylists as John Abercrombie and Pat Metheny without sounding like any of them." Moulder has also appeared on a number of Paul Wertico's CDs, including Live in Warsaw (1998, Igmod Records) and Don't Be Scared Anymore (Premonition 2000). He appears on Terry Callier's Time Peace (1998, Verve Records) and Lifetime (Blue Thumb 2000), and the Verve compilation Guitarism (1998).

Moulder is also the associate pastor at Ascension Parish, Oak Park. Priest by day -- jazz musician by night.
