Hubert Sumlin

This local blues guitar legend has a record Wake Up Call out on NYC's Blues Planet Records. His biography is that of the archetypal bluesman: he was born on November 16, 1931, the youngest of 13 children, in Greenwood, Miss., and grew up in Hughes, Ark., before moving to Chicago to play the blues. Over the years he played with the masters in Chicago: Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush and Pinetop Perkins. When he was eleven, Sumlin snuck into a local bar to hear Howlin' Wolf play. When the management tried to kick him out, Wolf made them let him stay and, after the gig, drive him home because the kid "just wanted to hear the music."

Sumlin has a considerable fan base: according to Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Hubert is the heaviest, most original guitar player I've ever heard in my life and that's the truth." He's also played with Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. One of the pioneers of the electric blues, Sumlin's clean smooth style is a refreshing combination of traditional delta-style rolling blues and the more modern, Chicago-style, Buddy Guy-type electric blues rock.

Hubert was married to the late Bea "Mama" Sumlin, Sunnyland Slim's niece.
