| 1887 - 1968 Edna Ferber was disappointed that she never had the money to attend college, but she managed to build a career as a reporter and writer that earned her recognition as "the greatest American woman novelist of her time." She worked for the Milwaukee Journal and the Chicago Tribune, and was a war correspondent during World War II. Like many of her contemporaries, Ferber expressed her belief in rugged American individualism in her fiction. Critics see her writing as insightful on a sentimental rather than a profound level. Her novels and stories are slices of American life, and many of them were so well-received that they were adapted for the stage and film. The musical version of "Show Boat" was a hit both on Broadway and on the screen. Other films based on Ferber's work include "So Big," "Dinner at Eight," and "Giant," which starred James Dean.
