Believe it or not, The Ashland is blessed with a perfectly descriptive name. Thanks to its neutral character, the bar blends seamlessly with the street on which it resides. Not quite a lounge, not quite a sports bar, it provides everything you might want for a pleasant night out, without overemphasizing any one element.

Yuppies and other neighborhood residents intermingle in the bar's two rooms (and small outdoor area). Patrons won't want for distractions in the bright, open front room, where the main bar is housed; in addition to the obligatory Golden Tee machine and electronic dartboard, six TVs dot the walls, showcasing all manner of sports.

Eclectic music pounds throughout, thanks to an ever-present DJ who holds court in the back room, located behind a curtain and up a few steps. Here there is a second, smaller bar, and an area that would be ideal for a private party. Couples can romance in a small, couch-filled lounge topped by a huge skylight before heading out onto what could be an impromptu dance floor on the right night.

In addition to a few ongoing drink specials ($5 Jager Bombs and shots, $3.50 Sierra Nevada) and bar food, there is a diverse selection of beers on tap. If the prices (up to $6 for a domestic pint) get you down, don't worry. There's bound to be a pretty girl giving away free samples of some new brand of liquor before the night is out (plus dollar Old Style and PBR drafts on Mondays).
