Perimeter Gallery is set up in a museum-like fashion. Unlike many Chicago hole-in-the-wall galleries, Perimeter is a huge space with a lower gallery as well as an expansive main exhibition room. Benches and chairs strategically placed in the center of various areas invite visitors to sit and stare at each work as intently as if they were trying to figure out a Jackson Pollack at the Art Institute.

Perimeter is not the place to discover the work of cutting-edge 20-something artists. The gallery showcases technically strong work done by mostly mid-career, established artists. The maturity is apparent in the work, which tends to be more abstract than representational. The gallery represents a permanent staple of about 25 artists and hosts a solo show, or sometimes a group show, to feature their work. The majority of Perimeter's artists are American, though a number of Japanese artists are shown throughout the year. Since 1982, Perimeter has featured sculpture, some fine art and works on paper in addition to paintings.
